Dennis Coard- Felice

Michele Williams-  Clare

Tennessee Williams stated that this was his “most beautiful play since Streetcar” and acknowledged that he drew inspiration from his relationship with his sister Rose, who was the first woman in the US to be given a lobotomy. Rose was behind many of the playwright’s vulnerable women and he looked after her as she grew older, enjoying an extremely close relationship with her.

The characters are a brother and sister, Felice and Clare and actor/producers, whose world is unravelling around them. The theatre troupe with whom they've been travelling have deserted them – unpaid and certain that Felice and Clare are insane. Without stagehands, lighting and sound effects, the two are determined to put on a performance for their audience (real or imaginary is debateable). All they can do is present The Two-Character Play, a play about their lives. But their lives have been so traumatised that they sometimes forget their audience, leave the script behind, and re-live episodes from their past.

Review Samples

“ Winterfall Theatre's production, directed by Catherine Hill and performed by Dennis Coard (Felice) and Michele Williams (Clare) succeeds amazingly well. Even my thirty-something friend, who admits to having the attention span of a nano second, was totally engrossed from beginning to end.

Dennis Coard and Michele Williams’ acting ensures that we care about these characters. We engage with their journey, coming to understand their multiple and conflicting fears – of confinement, of separation, of the outside world, of their past – and eventually even to celebrate their love.”

Jan Chandler, Australian Stage August 18th, 2014

"Dennis Coard and Michele Williams are fantastic in the roles of Felice and Clare respectively.

The Two-Character Play was inspired by Tennessee Williams’ childhood, specifically his relationship with his sister Rose who struggled with mental health issues and is the inspiration for the fragile women that appear repeatedly in his plays…

Michele Williams is an actress who clearly understands the nature of madness in Tennessee Williams' female characters.  Her performance is heart rending in its accuracy…”

The Music, August  20th 2014

‘Catherine Hill has directed robust performances from her actors, Dennis Coard and Michele Williams.”

Cameron Woodhead, The Age,  September 19th, 2012

“Catherine Hill has directed an oddly beautiful interpretation of two troubled, yet entertaining souls… Winterfall Theatre’s production standard is extremely high, aided here by Richard Vabre’s effective lighting design and magical, original music by Abe Pogos.

Dennis Coard portrays the character of Felice in a compelling performance that is at once highly theatrical and tragic. Michele Williams. is painfully vulnerable as Clare, while allowing for her to have many funny moments…"

Theatre People, August 24th, 2013

“The Two Character Play is very much an in-house story that thespians will understand better than the wider public…But director Catherine Hill makes the text and storyline accessible to the wider audience.

The two characters run their own theatre company and are also actors who were once celebrated in the world of theatre.  They have endured one of the most traumatic childhoods imaginable and that past has finally rendered them incapable of running their once successful company.

In many ways, this is a study in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in a time and place when it was not understood. The characters eventually descend into moments of madness. The play was inspired by Tennessee Williams’ sister Rose, who struggled with severe mental health issues.

Winterfall Theatre’s production is gripping due to the talent, experience and skill of its two actors, Dennis Coard and Michele Williams. Both give expert performances as Felice and Clare respectively.

Dennis Coard embodies the essence of the eccentric Felice, an old-style thespian whose emotional coping mechanisms are beginning to fail.

Michele Williams plays Clare with multiple layers, an alcoholic and prescription drug abuser, whose initial theatrical abandon gives way to unimagined terror. Williams gradually reveals more of Clare’s madness with forensic accuracy.

There are very moving moments as we see each character’s fear of the outside world and watch them each try to unsuccessfully comfort one another.

The show also has great lighting (by Richard Vabre) and an evocative, original music score by Abe Pogos.

Try to catch the show before the season ends…”
